Short answer: for a quick, plain capture, Windows 11's built-in Snipping Tool does the job. For long recordings with full manual control, OBS Studio is free with no limits. For demos and tutorials that look edited, use a recorder that zooms in on your clicks automatically: Girato (Windows, Mac and the browser), FocuSee, Cap (free for personal use), or the free open-source OpenScreen. Screen Studio, the app that made this look popular, does not run on Windows.

What to look for
- Readable on a phone. Most viewers watch small. A recorder that zooms in on each click keeps the text readable without you editing anything.
- Edits done for you. Zooms, cursor smoothing and a backdrop by hand take an hour per video. Auto-zoom recorders build them from what you clicked.
- Where your footage goes. Some tools upload to their cloud. Girato and OBS keep everything on your PC.
- The price over a year. Compare a year of a subscription with a one-time licence.
Trying Girato on Windows 11
- Open the browser version and record a tab. Nothing to install; here you add zooms by hand.
- If you like it, download the Windows app. It records your clicks and keystrokes and places the zooms for you.
- The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen asks first: choose More info, then Run anyway.
See it on your own screen
- Record twenty seconds in your browser
- Watch the zooms land on the timeline
