The best screen recorder for Windows 11

Comparison · 5 min read · Updated October 2026

Short answer: for a quick, plain capture, Windows 11's built-in Snipping Tool does the job. For long recordings with full manual control, OBS Studio is free with no limits. For demos and tutorials that look edited, use a recorder that zooms in on your clicks automatically: Girato (Windows, Mac and the browser), FocuSee, Cap (free for personal use), or the free open-source OpenScreen. Screen Studio, the app that made this look popular, does not run on Windows.

The whole Girato edit, filmed in the real app, which runs on Windows 11.

What to look for

Trying Girato on Windows 11

  1. Open the browser version and record a tab. Nothing to install; here you add zooms by hand.
  2. If you like it, download the Windows app. It records your clicks and keystrokes and places the zooms for you.
  3. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen asks first: choose More info, then Run anyway.

See it on your own screen

  • Record twenty seconds in your browser
  • Watch the zooms land on the timeline
