Short answer: OBS Studio and your operating system's built-ins (Snipping Tool on Windows, Screenshot toolbar on macOS) never add a watermark, but they only capture, so the polish is on you. A few auto-zoom recorders are also watermark-free on their free plans: OpenScreen (open source), Silk (Mac only) and Pane Studio (Windows only, 720p). The rest fund their free tiers with a badge, a time or resolution cap, a personal-use-only licence, or cloud lock-in; know which trade you're making.
Truly free, truly unwatermarked
- OBS Studio, the gold standard of free capture: any source, any quality, zero marks, open source. It records; it does not edit. Zooms, effects and pacing require a separate editor and your afternoon.
- Windows Snipping Tool / macOS Screenshot toolbar, instant, clean, basic. Region capture, an MP4/MOV out, nothing else.
- OpenScreen, free and open source (MIT) for Windows, macOS and Linux, with automatic zoom and no watermark. It is now a community-maintained project.
If your video is destined for a real audience, the missing piece in OBS and the built-ins is the edit, see what turns a capture into a video.
The free tiers of auto-editing tools (the trades)
Auto-zoom recorders do the editing for you, and their free tiers pay for that somehow:
| Tool | Free tier | The trade |
|---|---|---|
| Girato | Full editor, 1080p/60fps, commercial use allowed | 3 clean exports a month, then a small corner badge |
| Silk | Up to 4K60, no watermark | Mac only; chapters in the file and burned-in captions need the $69 licence (3 Macs, 12 months of updates) |
| Pane Studio | 720p at 30fps, no watermark, commercial use allowed | Windows only; 4K needs Pro |
| Cursorful | No watermark | non-commercial use only; 4K and webcam need Pro |
| Cap | Up to 4K60, no time limit on local recordings | personal use only; commercial use needs the $58 one-time Desktop licence (or $29 a year) |
| Loom (free) | 25 videos, 5 min each, 720p | videos live on their cloud, and the free plan cannot download them |

Full transparency, since this is our blog: Girato's free exports carry a small "Made with Girato" badge. Each month, 3 exports of any length carry no badge, and Pro removes it for good. We chose a badge over quality caps deliberately, a capped 720p video punishes your viewers; a badge only markets us.
