How to blur sensitive info in a screen recording

Short answer: add a blur region over the sensitive area for the time range it's visible, and do it in a tool that processes video locally, blurring footage after uploading it somewhere defeats the point. Better still, avoid capturing secrets in the first place with area recording and demo data.

What actually leaks in screen recordings

The classics, in rough order of frequency: email addresses in account menus, customer names in tables, API keys in configs and terminals, revenue/analytics numbers, browser tabs and bookmarks, taskbar apps, and notification toasts sliding in mid-take. Most leaks are in the chrome around your app, not the app itself.

Layer 1: don't capture it

• Record a region, not the screen, excludes taskbar, tabs and toasts by construction (how-to).
• Demo accounts with fake data beat blurring real data every time.
• Do-not-disturb mode before recording. A calendar toast has ruined many takes.

Layer 2: blur what slipped through

A proper blur tool gives you a rectangle with a time range: place it over the sensitive area, set when it starts and ends, done. Check the zooms: if your video has zoom effects, verify the blur covers the area while zoomed, not just in the wide shot. Scrub through every zoom that passes near the blurred region.

The unedited recording contains the unblurred secrets. If your recorder uploads footage to a cloud for processing, the sensitive frames have already left the building before you blur anything.
