How to crop a screen recording

Tutorial · 3 min read · Updated October 2026

Short answer: open the recording in an editor, choose crop, drag a box around the part you want to keep, and apply it. In Girato, press Crop, drag the area to keep, then Apply crop: the zooms, blur boxes and cursor move with the crop, so none of your edits need redoing. To skip cropping altogether, record a single window or an area of the screen in the first place.

One recording reframed to four shapes in the real Girato editor, then exported.

Crop, reframe or zoom?

How to crop in Girato

  1. Open Girato in the browser or the desktop app, and record or press Import video.
  2. Press Crop on the bar under the preview.
  3. Drag the area you want to keep; everything outside it dims.
  4. Press Apply crop. To undo it later, open Crop again and press Remove crop.
  5. Pick the output shape in Look and export.

Avoid cropping next time

Record only what the viewer needs: a single window, or a dragged area of the screen. The text stays larger, the file smaller, and there is nothing to hide afterwards.
