Short answer: plan the path before you record, record the browser window at a clean size, let every click become a close-up, label each step, cover anything private, and export 16:9 for your website plus 9:16 for social. A good walkthrough shows one task from start to finish and nothing else.
Step by step
- Write the path. List the clicks in order, for example: open Invoices, search, open an invoice, send a reminder. If a step is not on the list, it is not in the video.
- Set up the window. Use a demo account with made-up data, close other tabs, hide the bookmarks bar, and size the window so the text is readable, around 1600 by 1000 works well.
- Record calmly. Move the mouse slowly and pause for a second after each click, so the viewer sees what changed.
- Zoom on the clicks. In the Girato desktop apps the zooms are placed on your clicks for you; in the browser version you add them on the timeline with Zoom.
- Label the steps. Press Text and add a short title, such as "Step 1: find the overdue invoice".
- Hide private data. Press Blur and cover any email, name or number, for every second it is on screen.
- Export. 16:9 for the page it lives on, and 9:16 if you will post it to Shorts, Reels or TikTok.
A worked example
The films on this site come from one 20-second walkthrough of a made-up invoicing app. The path was five clicks: Invoices at 2.9 seconds, the search box at 4.3, the overdue invoice at 7.2, Send reminder at 10.8, and back to the overview at 14.1. Each click became a close-up, a step title went on at the start, and the customer's email, on screen from 7.4 to 14.1 seconds, got a blur box for exactly that span. The result plays above.
Common mistakes
- Recording the whole screen at a high resolution, so the text is tiny on a phone. Record the window, and let the zooms do the rest.
- Talking or clicking faster than the viewer can follow. One action, one pause.
- Real customer data on screen. Use demo data, or blur it.
