The 20-second bug report: screen recording for QA

Guide · 4 min read · Updated July 2026

Short answer: a 20-second video showing the exact click that triggers a bug replaces three rounds of "cannot reproduce" comments. The formula: start one step before the bug, click deliberately, let the failure happen fully, and zoom on the moment it breaks.

Why video repros close tickets faster

Written repro steps describe what the reporter thinks they did. Video shows what actually happened, including the step they didn't know mattered, the state they didn't mention, and the timing between actions. Engineers consistently rank "video attached" among the highest-signal things a ticket can contain.

Anatomy of a good repro clip

Privacy is part of the job

Bug repros are recorded on real systems with real data more often than any other video type. Record just the app region, and blur anything sensitive before attaching to a public tracker. Prefer local-first recorders: the raw footage of your production system shouldn't live on a third-party cloud.

The one-minute workflow

  1. Reproduce once off-camera to confirm the path.
  2. Record the area → trigger the bug → let it fail → stop.
  3. Auto-zoom lands on your clicks; trim to ~20 seconds; blur if needed.
  4. Export MP4 and attach it to the ticket with one line: expected vs actual.

Girato keeps this under a minute, and the clip auto-saves as a project, so when engineering asks "what happens if you click the other button?", you re-edit instead of re-reproducing.
