A ScreenFlow alternative for Windows and Mac

Comparison · 4 min read · Updated October 2026

Short answer: ScreenFlow is a mature Mac screen recorder and editor from Telestream, at $199, with paid upgrades for new major versions. It is a full editor, but every zoom is placed by hand and it only runs on a Mac. Girato is built for the opposite workflow: record, and the zooms, cursor and backdrop are done for you, on Windows, Mac or in a browser tab, for $99 once.

The whole Girato edit, filmed in the real app. Works on Windows, Mac or in the browser.

Where ScreenFlow wins

Depth. It is a full multi-track editor with years of Mac polish, ProRes and APNG export, and a stock media library. If you edit long tutorials frame by frame on a Mac, it is a serious tool.

Where Girato wins

Speed to a finished demo. Zooms come from your real clicks, the cursor glides, keystrokes can play as sound, and one recording exports as 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5. It runs on Windows too, so a mixed team can share one tool, and the lifetime licence is half the price.

Where Girato falls short

It is not a general video editor: no stock library, no ProRes 422 masters, no deep multi-track audio mixing. The Windows installer is not code-signed yet. For long, hand-edited productions on a Mac, ScreenFlow is still the stronger pick.
