The best free screen recorder with auto-zoom

Guide · 4 min read · Updated October 2026

Short answer: auto-zoom, the effect that makes recordings look edited, is often paywalled. Screen Studio lists no free plan, FocuSee offers a trial with one export, and most "free screen recorders" are plain capture tools with no automatic zoom. The free options that do zoom on clicks each draw the line somewhere: Girato's free tier (Windows, Mac and a browser version with no install), the open-source OpenScreen, Cap (personal use only), Silk (Mac only) and Pane Studio (Windows only, 720p).

Zooms in the real Girato editor. The desktop app places them from your clicks for you.

What Girato Free actually includes

The complete editor, not a demo: automatic 3D cursor-follow zoom, click spotlights and sounds, the typing sound + animation, all 26 backgrounds, trim/cut/speed ramps, privacy blur, microphone and webcam recording, GIF export, and 1080p at 60fps, with a small "Made with Girato" badge as the only trade. No card, no account, no time limit, and nothing ever uploads.

When the badge matters (and when it doesn't)

For bug reports, internal docs, course drafts and most social clips, a small corner badge costs you nothing. For client deliverables and polished launch videos you'll want it gone, that's the Pro line (about 40¢ a day, or a $99 lifetime). The point of a real free tier is that you decide when that day comes, with the tool already in your workflow.

Try it without installing anything

The fastest test: open the browser version, record twenty seconds of any tab, and add a zoom or two on the timeline. In the free desktop app, the zooms land on your clicks without you doing anything.
