Short answer: Camtasia is a capable, full manual editing suite for screen content, and that's exactly the problem if you just need good-looking demos regularly. Most Camtasia work sessions are spent doing by hand (zooms, callouts, pacing) what auto-editing recorders now generate from your recorded clicks.
What Camtasia is actually for
Long-form course production: multi-track timelines, quizzes, captions, interactive hotspots, template projects. If you produce hour-long structured e-learning with assessments, it remains a reasonable choice, that workflow genuinely needs a manual suite.
Where it's overkill
The majority of screen videos made today are 30 seconds to 5 minutes: feature demos, tutorials, bug repros, social clips, onboarding walkthroughs. For those, the Camtasia workflow, record, import, keyframe every zoom, place every callout, nudge every cut, costs an hour to produce what auto-zoom tools produce in minutes, because the recorder already knows where you clicked.
The modern alternatives, by need

Rule of thumb: if your timeline needs more than one video track, you need an editor. If it needs zooms, effects and pacing, you need a better recorder.
